On a cold spring afternoon last week eight of the Purbeck primary schools attended a tag rugby festival. Each school arrived at the Swanage and Wareham Rugby Club with a mixed squad of approx 10 pupils from years 5 and 6, all ready to compete for a place at the school games finals.
It was a piece of light relief for me as organiser because this time round it was left in the capable hands of the newly appointed Rugby ambassadors from years 11-13 to organise the event from start to finish, with a few meetings along the way to keep them on track.
The event was organised into two pools with semi finals and finals. The ambassadors did an excellent job in arranging the event, and many positive comments were made expressing how well they conducted themselves in a number of roles including refereeing through to speeches.
The standard of play throughout the event was high and every school adhered to high standards of sportsmanship. The four finalists were Swanage St Marys, Swanage St Marks, Wareham St Marys and Stoborough. These games were of an excellent standard with Stoborough finally being victorious. They will represent the Purbeck area at the school games.
It was a brilliant competition and a big Well Done needs to be mentioned to the Rugby Ambassadors for producing an event I would be proud of. These students are Will Slack, Jack Daniels, Mikayla Curtis, Tilly Ferguson and Ben Hocking. The following students also need thanking for their excellent standard of refereeing: Charlie Gynes, Callum Howlett, Sam Watts and Miles Ferguson. A big thank you to all of you, as again I wouldn’t be able to do it without you.
